BaoFeng UV-5R Quick Programming

This page will provide you some simple procedures to quickly program the BaoFeng UV-5R so you can be out and operational in no time. These are manual programming tips if you do not have the software and cable to program the radio on your computer.

Quick Reset

NOTE: THIS WILL RESET RADIO TO FACTORY DEFAULT

If for some reason you want to remove all programming in your radio and go back to factory defaults, perform the following:

[MENU] 40 [MENU] [MENU] [MENU]

Set Radio to English

The factory default language for the radio is Chinese. Performed the following to change to English.

[MENU] 14 [MENU] ENG [MENU] [EXIT]

Programming a Basic Simplex Channel (No Tone)

For this example, we will be programming, 145.580 Simplex into Channel 99

  1. Set radio to Frequency Mode (VFO)
  2. Select Upper Display [A/B]
  3. Turn TDR OFF (Dual Watch)
    [MENU] 7 [MENU] OFF [MENU] [EXIT]
  4. Delete Prior Data
    [MENU] 28 [MENU] 99 [MENU] [EXIT]
  5. Enter the TX Frequency Shift
    [MENU] 25 [MENU] OFF [MENU] [EXIT]
  6. Store RX frequency into channel
    146580 [MENU] 27 [MENU] 99 [MENU]
  7. Store TX frequency into channel
    [MENU] [MENU] [EXIT]
  8. Switch back to Channel Mode (MR)

Programming a Repeater Channel with Standard Offsets

For this example, we will be programming, 146.700 Repeater with 600kHz minus offset, and CTCSS (PL Tone) 123.0 into Channel 99

  1. Set radio to Frequency Mode (VFO)
  2. Select Upper Display
  3. Turn TDR OFF (Dual Watch)
    [Menu] 7 [Menu] OFF [Menu] [Exit]
  4. Delete Prior Data
    [Menu] 2 8 [Menu] 9 9 [Menu] [Exit]
  5. Enter RX frequency
    1 4 6 7 0 0
  6. Set TX CTCSS or DCS codes for Transmit.
    [Menu] 1 3 [Menu] 1 2 3 0 [Menu] [Exit]
  7. Enter the TX Frequency Shift.
    [Menu] 2 5 [Menu] - [Menu] [Exit]
  8. Repeater Offset.
    [Menu] 2 6 [Menu] 0 0 0 6 0 0 [Menu] [Exit]
  9. Store RX frequency
    [Menu] 2 7 [Menu] 9 9 [Menu] [Exit]
  10. Reverse RX TX display [ * Scan ]
  11. [Menu] [Menu] 9 9 [Menu] [ * Scan] [Exit]

Note: Only on 'some' the newer radios can instructions 9, 10, 11 be consolidated into one.

Replace 9-11 with: Store RX/TX frequency
[Menu] 2 7 [Menu] 9 9 [Menu] [Menu] [Menu] [Exit]

Switch back to Channel Mode (MR)

Programming a Repeater Channel with any offset (Standard or Odd Split)

For this example, we will be programming, 146.700 Repeater with 600kHz minus offset, and CTCSS (PL Tone) 123.0 into Channel 99

  1. Set radio to Frequency Mode (VFO)
  2. Select Upper Display
  3. Turn TDR OFF (Dual Watch)
    [Menu] 7 [Menu] OFF [Menu] [Exit]
  4. Delete Prior Data
    [Menu] 2 8 [Menu] 9 9 [Menu] [Exit]
  5. Set TX CTCSS / DCS codes for Transmit. (optional)
    [Menu] 1 3 [Menu] 1 2 3 0 [Menu] [Exit]
  6. Store RX frequency into channel
    1 4 6 7 0 0 [Menu] 2 7 [Menu] 9 9 [Menu] [Exit]
  7. Store TX frequency into channel 1 4 6 1 0 0 [Menu] [Menu] 9 9 [Menu] [Exit]
  8. Switch back to Channel Mode (MR)
